Hundreds of raged YouTube users are blatantly accusing Tamil directors for copying Hollywood movies. COPYING is a big NO for Indians fans and would piss them off for no reason and the question of whether did they actually watched the original Hollywood version of the purported copied movie,is irrelevant. You see, this is about honor. Copying brings dishonor to our family!
"no light at the end of the tunnel-thats some deep shit now. We can see how serious this is.
The problem with people is that, they don’t know the difference between copying a.k.a ( the educated people call ) plagiarism and inspiration.
Copying is plagiarizing an art, a reproduction of the original. No changes or whatsoever but you simply Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V and claim it yours.Inspiration on the other hand, is an idea of an existing work that motivates you to do yours.
For example, you can’t write a poem without inspiration and let’s say your poem is about an old man’s penis. Now, the old man’s penis is your inspiration, you look at it, you think about it, you think about the beatings it went through and you write your poem based on that. So, can you say the poem copied the life of an old man’s penis? NO, it inspired you to deliver the beautiful tale of an old man’s penis in your poem.
What we’re trying to say is that, a movie can inspire another movie. Movies are art. Here are a few Tamil movies that were inspired by Hollywood movies that, hey!didt suck.
#1. Ghajini (inspired by Memento)
Memento(Hollywood)
Memento a movie by Christopher Nolan (the guy who directed inception & dark knight movies) with Guy Pearce in leading role, is a head spinning tale of a man suffering from short term memory loss who uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife. Leonard Shelby has short term memory loss resulting from an injury he sustained which was associated with the murder of his wife. He remembers his life prior to the incident, such as being an insurance claims investigator. He has learned to cope with his memory loss through dealing with a man named Sammy Jankis, a person he investigated professionally who also had short term memory issues. Some of the coping mechanisms are to have a system of where to place things, talk to people face-to-face if possible rather than on the telephone as to be able to gauge their true intention, take Polaroid and write copious notes, the most important of those which he tattoos on his body so that they become permanent. Leonard's current mission is to find and kill his wife's murderer, who he believes is a man named John G a name which is tattooed on his body. Over the course of a day, Leonard is assisted in this mission by a few people seemingly independent of each other, including a man named Teddy and a woman named Natalie. However, each time he meets them, he has no idea who they are, why they are helping him and if indeed they are working toward the same goal as him. We meet the loquacious Teddy and the seductive Natalie (a barmaid who promises to help) and we glimpse Leonard's wife through memories from before the assault.
Memento has complicated storyline but an interesting one. In memento, each marks or polaroid in Leonard’s body or whatever, acts as a clue and the story concludes when each clues are put together the find the killer of his wife.
Ghajini
Meanwhile in Ghajini, Surya as Sanjay Ramasamy is a rich tycoon suffering from short term memory loss due to being hit by a metal pole when trying to intervene on his girlfriend's murder. Because of the severe injury on his head, his memory can only last for fifteen minutes and he doesn't remember events or incidents that have happened before in his life. He can now only live a comprehendible life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera to remind himself of the incidents that have happened. His story in unraveled by a police officer who is hunting him due to several murders he has committed while trying to find his girlfriend's murderer through his diary. His story has also piqued the interest of a medical college student, Chitra who is searching for a patient with an "interesting" record for her college project. Chitra (Nayanthara) comes to know about Sanjay's love with Kalpana (Asin Thotumkal) a model cum activist. When her activist work for children comes in the way of child racketeers, she is killed by Lakshman when she intervened with his plan of kidnapping 25 young girls to Calcutta. So, with the help of Chitra, Sanjay sets out on a revenge spree, searching for the murderer of the one love of his life.
Both movies operate on the same storyline, both have memory loss, each using tattooed notes and pictures to take revenge on their wife’s killer and both were helped by a seductive character (Natalie in Memento & Chitra in Ghajini). However in Ghajini, the storyline has been much simplified with some indianized elements. Some character roles have been changed, for eg Chitra (who is actually Natalie in memento) is a medical student and not a bartender.
(But a sexy song in the movie indicates that Chitra (the medical student) was a seductive ex bartender & a part time stripper.)
#2. Deiva Thirumagal (inspired by I am Sam)
I am Sam
I am Sam is about this retard guy named Sam Dawson who has the mental capacity of Patrick Star from SpongeBob. He has a daughter with a homeless woman whom she abandons them as soon as they leave the hospital. He names his daughter Lucy Diamond (after the Beatles song, because apparently all retards are obsessed with Beatles), and raises her. But as she reaches age 7 herself, Sam's limitations start to become a problem at school, she’s intentionally holding back to avoid looking smarter than him. The authorities take her away, and Sam shames high-priced lawyer Rita Harrison into taking his case pro bono.
Deiva Thirumagal
Deiva Thirumagal (Gods Child in English) is also about a retard that has the mental maturity of a pants shitting 5 year old boy. His wife delivers a baby girl and dies. The girl, Nila is brought up in his own way by Krishna. He showers all his love and care on her. But fate takes a quick turn. Nila's grandfather Rajendran, a powerful and influential man in society, enters the scene. Fearing that his granddaughter is not safe under a mentally-challenged dad, he takes away the girl from Krishna. His other daughter Shwetha takes care of the child. Krishna runs from pillar to post to get back his daughter. He gets acquainted with advocate Anuradha and Vinod , her junior to get back the custody of Nila.
Both movies are touching actually, teaching about the great deal about love between a smart girl & a retarded father and whether it’s really all you need to bring up a child. The movie also thought us another thing that is, no matter how retarded you are, they will always be a woman who wants to love you and have sex with you.
#3.Avai Shanmugi(inspired by Miss Doubtfire)
Mrs Doubtfire
Mrs Doubtfire featured Robin Williams as a divorced parent who disguises himself as a female Daniel Hillard is no ordinary father, so when he learns his ex-wife needs a housekeeper, he applies for the job. With the perfect wig, a little makeup and a dress for all occasions, he becomes Mrs. Doubtfire, a devoted British nanny who is hired on the spot. Free to be the "woman" he never knew he could be, the disguised Daniel creates a whole new life with his entire family.
Avai Shanmugi
Similarly in Avai Shanmugi, featured by Kamal Hassan as a divorced father who disguises himself as an elderly female caretaker so that he can spend time with his daughter who stays with his now ex-wife.However Kamal Hassan has added enough sub-plots that helps the film to acquire a local flavour and also adds to the overall comic moments of the film.
(the indian version has flying motorbikes btw)
#4. Panchathanthiram(inspired by Very Bad Things)
Very Bad Things
Going back a few days, Fisher organizes a crazy bachelor party in a Las Vegas hotel with his best friends: Moore, Robert Boyd (Slater), and brothers Adam and Michael Berkow (Stern and Piven), spending the night with drinks, drugs and a stripper/prostitute, Tina (Tai). Things go awry when Michael gets drunk and pays Tina extra money for sex in the bathroom, then accidentally slams her against a wall and puts a towel hook through her head, killing her instantly. As the group argues over what to do - Adam insisting that they call the police and Boyd demanding that they bury Tina's body in the desert - a security guard comes to investigate the noise and sees Tina's corpse in the bathroom. In desperation, Boyd stabs the guard to death and the group is forced to dismember the bodies to take them to the desert for burial. The rest of the movie is friends turning back against each other plotting murders as the cover-up builds. On the wedding day, Boyd confronts Fisher and demands Adam's life-insurance money; Fisher refuses and a fight ensues. Intervening, Laura viciously beats Boyd into unconsciousness with a hat stand, but during the wedding, Fisher and Moore realize that Boyd, who was to be the best man, has the wedding rings. Moore retrieves them and Boyd succumbs to his injuries while Laura and Fisher are married. Once the newlyweds have a private moment, Laura demands that Fisher bury Boyd's body in the desert, and then leave no witnesses by killing Moore and Adam's dog. Fisher and Moore head out to bury Boyd with the bodies of Michael, Tina, and the guard, but Fisher cannot go through with killing Moore or the dog. Overcome reminiscing about happier times with his friends, Fisher loses focus and crashes into a passing car.
Fisher, Moore, and the dog are all left disabled, and Laura is forced to look after them and Adam's sons for the rest of her life.
Panchathanhiram
Similarly, the Indian version too, revolves around 5 douchebags and an angry ex-wife.).Ram an ex-pilot,the main lead in this movie, with his 4 buddies decided to go for a vacation to help Ram to take his mind off his ex wife. And by taking his mind its means by hiring a hooker (Maggi) for Ram.Things got bitter between the hooker and Ram. To salvage the situation, 1 of Ram’s friend hurries back to Maggie's room, only to find Maggi dead. Panicking, they decided to get rid of the body.Ram discovers a cache of diamonds inside the dead girl's cell phone. A few days after ,the friends get very nervous when they learn of a news article regarding the discovery of a dead body in the same area that they disposed off their dead bodyAt the party, a "twist" is revealed when the supposedly-dead Maggi appears, demanding her diamonds back. She then reveals the truth, that the diamonds belong to her diamond-smuggling boss and that she had stolen it from him. She had seen an opportunity to fake her death in order for her diamonds to be temporarily safe with Ram.
Both movies almost have a similar early plot, however as the story progresses, Panchathanthiram decided to move away from the original Very Bad Thing’s climax and ended up with its own dark humor comedy & merged a diamond heist sub-plot with its main story, which makes the movie a 100% comedy movie that is worth watching.
#5. Julie Ganapathy (inspired by Misery)
Misery
Misery itself is an adaptation from Stephen King's novel with same title. In this movie,best-selling novelist Paul Sheldon is on his way home from his Colorado hideaway after completing his latest book, when he crashes his car in a freak blizzard. Paul is critically injured, but is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes, Paul's "number one fan", who takes Paul back to her remote house in the mountains (without bothering to tell anybody). Unfortunately for Paul, Annie is also a psychotic.
Julie Ganapathy
Julie Ganapathy was also inspired by Stephen King's Misery,so there nothing much different from the original plot actually. However, the fat, forty plus Saritha as Julie, with spooky neurotic, dominates the film with her performance. The whole movie is available on youtube
